When Jesus Speaks through the Abandoned Ones

God happens in unexpected ways. It occurred to me the other Saturday, February 22, when I went with Soroptimist friends Delle, Pat, Tonette, Racquel, and Pachot to an orphanage. This is run by Rev Fr. Boyet Concepcion in the town of Bustos, Bulacan.

Our Malolos group was meant to share culinary skills with some 61 students, such as cooking pasta and Maja Blanca. But since 61 was too large a crowd to fit in the kitchen, I offered to take some 20 of these orphans and give them a healthcare workshop.

The girls were upbeat and receptive to the modality called BodyTalk Access, which I had been learning these past years. At the end of the hour, I asked them to sing for me in return. They suddenly burst out with a song that was not familiar to me. But they cried out with such Fervor I felt the walls tremble.

It went something like this. “Lord Jesus, I love you. Never leave me, thank you!” That was what I heard, a refrain they must all be carrying in their hearts, for these were orphans, 8 to 21 of age. They came from the slums of Tondo or displaced from the tsunami in Tacloban. Some were brought to this Bahay at Yaman orphanage due to separation or death of their parents.

These orphans live with their own uncertainties but pray, always hoping someday they will evolve into beautiful beings and soar like the lovely white butterfly.
