TERESITA TANSECO-CRUZ

The old year ends, a new year begins. At 79, I conjure up “old” as me aging, and “new”as the challenge to face increasing physical limitations of the aforementioned aging. I try to dig into my almost 8 decades for any armaments that might help me navigate these unsettling encounters of the senior kind.

But I realize that I need only to turn to my one DIVINE CONSTANT, he whose birthday we have just celebrated. Because Jesus, in his staggering fidelity, is as present to me today as when he began his earthly life for me, in that manger. And because his love is precisely unbound by time or events, newness of life with him waits continuously just around the corner, no matter that I round every corner nowadays with slower gait or dimming eyesight, spotty hearing or capricious memory.

And just like that, “yesterday” shows up in my musings unbidden, then quickly dissolves into a Beatles’ song!

So my adaptation of the Beatles’ popular “Yesterday,” is dedicated to all who may now live with physical diminishment but who are absolutely alive in the interior replenishment of God’s love every blessed moment, and through the love of others and for others…perhaps remembering that the past – with all its joys and struggles, triumphs and disappointments, can lend power, profound peace and meaning to the present and to new beginnings – in God’s company, always.

Yesterday, cataract had seemed so far away

Wrinkle-free skin no hair turning gray

Oh, wasn’t that just yesterday?

Suddenly, aching joints are going on a spree

My poor fingers, elbows, creaking knee

Pronouncing me an “elderly”!

Ah, youth – had to go

For much more was on the way

So I could become

Who and what i am today

Yesterday isn’t gone, it’s with me everyday

As I live, rejoice or cry or pray

Yes, I give thanks for yesterday.

  1. What a great way to start the new year!

There is Gratitude for 2022 and Hope for 2023 as we “give thanks for yesterday” and look forward for “much more on the way”.

Yes, we will all grow a year older, but when we see a glimpse of who we could become, our hearts will surely sing!

    Cheers!

  2. “And because his love is precisely unbound by time or events, newness of life with him waits continuously just around the corner,”
    — Beautifully articulated, Baby! Thankful for all the years spent in this aging vessel, but looking forward to hear Him say “Welcome! Enter into the joy of your Master.”

  3. Beautiful article! As long as we keep our focus on what awaits us in the far future, we wouldn’t long fir yesterday but look forward to each year that brings us closer to eternity.

  4. Serenely profound essay, Baby. You have captured what we, our classmates, are experiencing. God is good, and our Blessed Mother has been guiding us through this complicated and spiritual life with gentle love 💕

  5. Indeed, Ate Baby, “yesterday isn’t gone, it’s with me everyday….Yes I give thanks for yesterday….” Couldn’t agree more, that who we are is a product of the journey through decades past, and the indelible imprint of God throughout all those days, in pain or in joy, victorious or feeling like a failure, but at all times, in His hands, in His embrace, even if we seem not to feel it. Blessed it is to go beyond the present and look to the future, and to draw meaningfully from all the immortalized memories and moments of yesterday. May we travel in faith so that the tomorrows can turn into blessed yesterdays as well….

  6. Wonderful reflection and words of wisdom to live by ❤️

Thank you for your sharing and I will always remember you as I seek replenishment in my own life 😊
